pontcysyllte aqueduct

Only an hour away, this breathtaking attraction is one of our favourite parts of the canal.

The Pontcysyllte (pronounced PONT-KER-SUL-TEE) Aqueduct carries the Llangollen Canal over the River Dee. In Welsh its called Traphont Ddwr Pontcysyllte, taking 10 years to design and build, it was completed in 1805.

It is the oldest and longest navigable aqueduct in Great Britain and the highest in the world, measuring 126 feet high and 307 metres long.

The structure is a grade 1 listed building and one of the few attractions in the U.K. to be granted World Heritage Status. We think the best way to experience the Pontcysyllte is with Crest Narrowboats.

A new visitor centre is open, with a cafe in a boat for the summer boats, and two pubs are nearby which serve food. Keep your eye out for the sweetie boat, serves amazing ice creams.

More information on the Aqueduct can be found here at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct World Heritage Site
